Wind Energy Today
Wind is the world’s fastest-growing energy source, with an average annual growth rate of 29 percent over the last ten years. In contrast, over the same time period, coal use has grown by 2.5 percent per year, nuclear power by 1.8 percent, natural gas by 2.5 percent, and oil by 1.7 percent.
Despite this growth, wind energy still only makes up 0.4% of the energy produced in the United States today. And there is still debate over cost efficiency; for example, opponents cite that building renewable energy plants costs twice as much as fossil fuel plants, while proponents point out the fact that wind, unlike oil or coal, is free.
