Ladybugs - Good or Bad?

This is a huge swarm of ladybugs in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area near Malibu, CA. It's cool to see so many of them in one place, but it seems like they're going to destroy whatever they're eating. Some research shows that they're an invasive species from further south in Mexico that may have an adverse affect on the environment. A locust by any other name?
