National Geographic examines the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. American military leaders say drugs, weapons, and Al Qaeda leaders easily slip through the porous border, despite the presence of the Pakistani military. After the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, the Taliban, who harbored al Qaeda, fled to Pakistan, and the border area is thought to be where Osama bin Laden and top leaders are hiding.
But there is some good news. Public opinion in Pakistan of al Qaeda and bin Laden has drastically fallen. And recent drone attacks by the U.S. military has thought to weakened the al Qaeda stronghold.
Though primarily based throughout the Middle East and North Africa, Al Qaeda has cells opperating in nearly 100 countries, including the UK, the US, Spain, and Germany.
Could the answer lie in religon? Algeria, who struggles with al Qaeda cells, may have a new answer - Sufism.
