#ThankYouFriday: Rep. Maureen Walsh
How can I deny anyone the right to have that incredible bond with another individual in their life?
Republican Rep. Maureen Walsh, of Walla Walla, Washington’s 16th District, stood in front of her fellow legislators and spoke about Washington's marriage equality bill. Instead of talking facts and figures, she gave an emotional and heartfelt speech about love. Tearing up as she spoke, Walsh shared memories from her 23-year marriage and talked about her daughter, who came out as a lesbian a few years ago. “She’s met a person she loves very much, and some day I want to throw a wedding for that kid. I hope that’s exactly what I can do,” she said.
Walsh was one of two Republicans who supported the Washington marriage bill that passed in the Washington State House on Wednesday. The bill is expected to be signed into law by Governor Christine Gregoire on Monday. This will make Washington the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.
Each Friday here at TakePart is #ThankYouFriday. Representative Maureen Walsh, today we thank you for your courage and your compassion.
