Teri Schwartz: It Is Your Job to Invent the Future

The Dean of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television talks master visual storytelling.

I am very passionate about the infinite power of story to really make a difference in the world.

For Teri Schwartz, the Dean of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, timeless movies, memorable TV shows, and unforgettable Broadway plays share one common, indelible trait: a great, humanistic story. Sure, how’d-they-do-that animation or repeat-viewing-worthy special effects help, but, at the end of the day, story is king. “You can delight, entertain, engage, and transform all at once; you can explore the whole range of human nature and complexity,” says Schwartz. “My greatest wish is that we nurture and develop the kinds of storytellers, and artists, scholars, and industry leaders, who really are going to take their diverse voices and make a difference in the world.”
