We won against all the odds.
Larry Brilliant believes that a true optimist is someone who knows how bad things really are but sees how they can be better. A former member of the UN team that led the eradication of smallpox in India, he saw firsthand what can be accomplished in spite of the challenges one faces. “We won against all the odds,” says Brilliant. “When smallpox was eradicated, it changed the eradicators, us, as much as we changed the disease. And it left us with a feeling that anything is possible.” Today Brilliant is President of the Skoll Global Threats Fund, whose mission is to confront global threats imperiling humanity by seeking solutions, strengthening alliances, and spurring the actions needed to safeguard the future.
TakePart travelled to the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, England, to pick the brains of the world’s biggest thinkers.
