First Book President ‘Leaps Out of Bed’ to Help Kids

Kyle Zimmer reflects on what first motivated her to get books to children in need.

It’s those challenges and working with a team of really capable, wonderful, dedicated people [that] keeps you leaping out of bed every morning.

A former lawyer, Kyle Zimmer founded First Book after tutoring at a soup kitchen and discovering there were no books available for the 30 to 40 kids eager to learn. As an “international organization that’s focused on providing access to books and educational materials for classrooms and programs serving kids in need all over the world,” their mission is not to fight illiteracy, but to end it. Today, First Book has provided more than 85 million books to children in need, but Zimmer insists they’ve barely scratched the surface. “But it’s those challenges and working with a team of really capable, wonderful, dedicated people [that] keeps you leaping out of bed every morning.”
