Darell Hammond Saves Play for America’s Children

KaBOOM!’s founder tells us why having a playground within walking distance from every child is important.

It’s through play that kids build the social skills, the creative skills, and the cognitive skills to deal with an ever-changing world in which they’re growing up.

“Live every day as if it’s your last day.” It’s with this enthusiastic outlook that Darell Hammond founded KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to saving play for America’s children. Specifically, they envision a nation where every child lives within walking distance of a place to play such as a park or playground. “Only 1 in 5 kids lives within access to a park,” says Hammond. “We need to stop treating play as a luxury. It’s through play that kids build the social skills, the creative skills, and the cognitive skills to deal with an ever-changing world in which they’re growing up.” In 2011 KaBOOM! celebrated the completion of their 2,000th playground with First Lady Michelle Obama in attendance.
