Tom Spicer’s sister Kate calls Fragile X Syndrome, “a sort of autism with bells on.” The National Fragile X Foundation says it’s “a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges and various physical characteristics.” Either way, Fragile X Syndrome has made Tom’s adult life quite different from that of his journalist sister Kate and filmmaker brother Will.
Tom’s love of all things Metallica and their drummer, Lars Ulrich, inspired the family to set on a quest to make his dream come true and give Tom the opportunity to meet Lars. Will and Kate have combined their attempts at doing something kind for their brother and reconnecting as a family with their filmmaking and reporting skills in the new documentary, Mission to Lars.
We don’t know yet if they succeeded in the meeting, but it looks to be a memorable, shared adventure this family won’t soon forget.
This clip is the introduction to the film, but you can watch the official trailer on Vimeo. The film is set for release in June in the U.K., but has not yet scheduled U.S. or international release dates.
If you could make a lifelong dream come true for your sibling or loved one, what would it be?
