Clip of the Day: Don’t Cover Up Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is faced by women around the world, yet so many keep silent about their painful experiences. According to a Council of Europe study, one in four women encounter domestic abuse. To help break the silence, Refuge, a U.K.-based charity, has teamed up with YouTube makeup star Lauren Luke for a powerful video campaign.
Luke's typical videos teach viewers how to try the latest trends in makeup. In this video, "How to Look Your Best the Morning After," she uses her usual teaching style to show how to cover injuries inflicted by an intimate partner. Though her facial bruises are fake, the haunting effects of this epidemic are clearly conveyed.
Lauren Luke, famous for her makeup tutorials, covers up the wounds of domestic violence.The issue of domestic abuse hits close to home for Luke, who has experienced an abusive partner. She tells AdWeek, "He never physically hurt me...but sometimes it was like living with a volcano which could erupt at any second—I felt I was walking on egg shells just to keep him from exploding and smashing something across the room."
With Refuge's 40 years of experience, and Lauren Luke's nearly half a million YouTube subscribers, the campaign is on its way to making a powerful impact in raising awareness for an all-too-common issue.
