Jenga Mwendo on the Future of New Orleans

Jenga Mwendo organized the Backyard Gardeners’ Network in 2009 to revitalize the tradition of partial food self-sufficiency that existed in much of New Orleans before tens of thousands of residents’ fruit trees and vegetable gardens were flooded after Hurricane Katrina. She sees urban agriculture as a lever for building community, which in turn provides benefits beyond just food access.

“We have a really strong cultural tradition of growing food in this neighborhood, and we could use it to make our community stronger.”
