Darren Walker, the Ford Foundation's President, Talks About the Future of New Orleans
Darren Walker is CEO of the Ford Foundation, the nation’s second-largest philanthropic organization. Born in Lafayette, La., he has worked as a lawyer and investment banker, and for a community development organization in New York City. He was surprised to see, after the flood, how weak were the civic institutions in New Orleans, and says that the first step organizations like his took in helping rebuild the city was to strengthen the resilience of local government, community-based organizations, and the private sector.
“For New Orleans to be a successful city, it has to be a city that is successful for all its residents and that is able to overcome some of the historic patterns and behaviors that marginalized far too many New Orleanians.”
