Scientists have clearly demonstrated that global warming, if it continues unchecked, will do irreparable harm to the planet, to the survival of certain species, and to human civilization. In spite of an overwhelming consensus among their peers about the nature of climate change, scientists are called communists and threats to American democracy. Concerted efforts are made to undercut their work, to marginalize them, and even to subject them and their families to harm. This clip from Merchants of Doubt demonstrates the type of hate mail that climate scientists receive on a regular basis.

Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically comedic, yet illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change.

Merchants of Doubt, which was produced by TakePart's parent company, Participant Media, rolls out in select cities on March 6 and nationwide on March 13. Get the latest updates at takepart.com/merchantsofdoubt.
