ABC series Blackish, which centers on an upper-middle-class family, is reflective of creator Kenya Barris' personal life, in which he similarly works to provide for his doctor wife and five children.

Barris emphasizes that his comedy embraces race as a key issue and is not just a family show with a black cast. Barris weighs in on other shows with diverse characters, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Scandal, in which race is not integral to the story line.
