Building a business is more than just cobbling together a financial plan, finding a storefront, and building a website. It takes confidence, drive, and creativity to turn a good idea into a thriving company. For women, entrepreneurship is an even bigger challenge. There are 9.1 million women-owned enterprises in the U.S., creating more than $1.4 billion in revenue. Yet the obstacles in their path are real: Women own only 30 percent of businesses, and securing capital can be difficult—only 19 percent of angel investment is given to women. Eileen Fisher understands these hurdles firsthand. Fisher started her company in 1984 with just $350 and a vision, and she continues to support other women business owners with an innovative grant program. To expand this effort, we’ve partnered to highlight 30 amazing companies, all helmed by strong, creative leaders determined to beat the odds. Even better, they’ve all found ways to give back, contributing to their communities in inventive ways.

We’ll unveil new entrepreneurs each week, showcasing the cool products and important lessons they’ve learned along the way. Each profile will include a personal video and a simple, effective way to take action to support women entrepreneurs. Later this year, be on the lookout for our holiday gift guide showcasing food, style, and tech gifts from these women-owned businesses that your friends and family will love.

So come explore their stories, and get inspired. Because whether they’re building an empire around organic gum, a neighborhood bar, or eco-friendly board games, the common denominator is passion.
