Wake Up and Smell the iBacon

A new alarm clock app swaps rings and beeps for the scent of smoked pork.

If arising to the blare of an alarm clock gets your day off to a bad start, a certain purveyor of hot dogs has a less jarring alternative—and it involves bacon. With a free smartphone app and a piece of hardware that attaches to a headphone jack, you can wake to the scent of sizzling bacon every morning.

This ad for the Oscar Mayer Institute for the Advancement of Bacon’s “Wake Up & Smell the Bacon” alarm clock sells the experience as an extended hallucination of smoked pork belly. The video shows pre-awakening dreams jumping from bacon rain to astral bacon to the sweet, sweet smell of bacon-petaled roses. At one point, it looks like the brunet star of the spot is being made into bacon herself, enveloped in some celestial cloud of applewood smoke as a planet-size cast-iron skillet appears on the horizon.

Then, right as the pig is creeping through the woods, running toward the bacon lover amid the thicket of bacon-flowered rosebushes, just before the whole reverie could turn into a nightmare (running into a feral pig in the woods is not an encounter I’d want to experience), she wakes up. It’s just her iPhone, after all, emitting a cloud of faux bacon scent to gently awaken her from the smoky reverie.

“Wake up,” says the breathless voiceover, “to the morning of your dreams.”
