posted on 12/26/2009 - 15:32Melting glaciers offer a vital source of nutrients for many coastal and oceanic food webs, but as the pace of melting increases with warming global temperatures, there is concern that too much is being released too quickly. A new study shows that the organic matter held within the frozen glaciers, for nearly 4,000 years-old in some cases, has retained a surprisingly high level of nutritional value and is immediately processed by marine microbes. And while the released organic matter has helped fuel highly productive fisheries in some areas, including salmon in Alaska, if glaciers continue to melt at unprecedented rates, the shift could disrupt the delicate balance of marine food webs.
