Congo to Put Price Tag on Rainforest

No less than 12 billion dollars is the demand to the G20 countries if the Congolese rainforest is to survive. “We would like to stop all logging immediately if it would be feasible in any way. However, logging constitutes a livelihood for many people in our country, so we can not just tell them to stop without compensation,” said José Endundo Bononge, Minister of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism for the Democratic Republic of Congo, at Wednesday's conference about Congo's rainforest in DGI-byen in Copenhagen. The conference was organized by the Danish organization Face The Climate. The rainforest in Congo is the world's second largest after the Amazon covering an area about the size of Western Europe. According to Roger Muchuba, civil society coordinator in the Congolese REDD, an organization dedicated to protect the rainforest, an area of the rainforest the size of France may be gone before the end of the next decade if the logging is not put to a hault. Logging of rainforests in the world contributes to 15 percent of global emission of CO2 – that's more than the transport sector. José Endundo Bononge explained that the government of the DRC is not capable of enforcing the law against illegal loggers, or to give people economic opportunities other than logging.
