From New York Times -- For many students in New Orleans, teachers are the only authority figures in their lives presently. With many parents and children separated by the storm, kids are acting out at school in a very aggressive manner. Some of the students live with relatives or on their own, either way, the lack of discipline at home is bleeding over into the school atmosphere.
In the last six weeks, students at McDonogh, the largest functioning high school here, have assaulted guards, a teacher and a police officer. A guard and a teacher were beaten so badly that they were hospitalized.
