Mental Health, Human Rights & Legislation
Comment from the contributor:
From World Health Organization --
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), we are facing a human rights emergency in mental health. Adults and children are subjected to terrible treatment and discrimination because of mental illnesses. They are denied community participation and basic needs.
Mental disorders are a global disease, not relegated to one ethnicity or socioeconomic group. Insurance for mental illness is hard to come by, and legislature is slow to be passed on the subject.
Developing nations have the furthest to go in terms of mental health care, perpetuating a cycle of crippling poverty that does not cater to the needs of the mentally ill. But even in the richest countries, receiving care can be an endless pursuit.
