From The New York Times -- The ongoing Iraq War began on March 20, 2003, with an invasion of international forces led by the United States. The war's goals and strategies have evolved over time, from disarming Iraq of alleged weapons of mass destruction, to restoring peace as sectarian civil war spreads throughout the country.
The fall of Iraq’s brutal, powerful dictator unleashed a wave of celebration, then chaos, looting, violence and ultimately insurgency. Rather than quickly return power to the Iraqis, including political and religious leaders returning from exile, the United States created an occupation authority that took steps widely blamed for alienating many Iraqis and igniting Sunni-led resistance.
