I'm sure you're familiar with how malaria is transmitted from human to human - via mosquitoes.  But, I bet you didn't know that "the parasites (called sporozites) migrate to the liver where they mature and release another form," at this point they enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc on the red blood cells in the body - any infected red blood cell has about 48 to 72 hours from this point before it ruptures and infects more red blood cells.
