With the financial rewards very high and risk very low, piracy off the coast of Somalia has become a huge problem. Increasing sophistication of their operations points to cooperation with warlords and contacts in European ports. Whereas the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia was traditionally the most pirate-prone sea corridor, the strong central governments of the region have managed to control hijacking incidences. In comparison, Somalia is a lawless country with no central government and a serious humanitarian crisis.
