From <i>Appalachian Voices</i> -- In this northwest corner of Tennessee, dairy farmers must get big or get out. Twenty years ago, there were 3,695 dairies in Tennessee. Now there are 703. Despite the negative economic and environmental impact large livestock facilities have on surrounding areas, community members who want to prevent CAFOs from gaining even more ground find themselves in an uphill battle.
For 33 years, eight months, and 20 days, Vance Gentry of Shady Valley in Johnson County, Tennessee milked cows at four in the morning and four in the evening. He still wakes up before his alarm even though he sold his herd two years ago, unable to make a living.
