From Washington Post --Critics of No Child Left Behind feel that the law focuses to heavily on math and reading while pushing subjects like art, history, and geography to the side. Now some lawmakers are trying to encourage the teaching of geography by introducing legislation for the Geography is Fundamental Act. Some students, however, are inspired to learn about geography by events like the National Geographic Society's annual National Geography Bee.
Critics of the No Child Left Behind law, which requires annual math and reading tests in grades three through eight and once in high school, say it has pushed subjects including geography, history and art to the side.
