“All Indians, culturally, have love, respect, and great devotion for the elephant,” a a former member of India’s Task Force on Elephants told National Geographic. Like Sri Lanka, India holds elephants in high regard. Villages especially designed for pachyderms, including those that partake in an annual elephant festival in Jaipur, let them roam. At the end of the day, mahouts, or elephant riders, bathe the animals.
