Every medication comes with a risk of side effects—often general, catch-all ones like fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, or headache. But some medications do things to your body that are a little wackier—like turn your pee a different color, or cause you to grow hair in places you’d really rather hair didn’t grow. “The same chemical structure that causes the drug to work can cause the side effects,” explains Andrew Forest, Pharm.D., clinical pharmacy manager at Mercy Medical Center, in Baltimore, Maryland. “Changing the drug even just a bit to lose the side effect could result in [patients] not getting the full benefit.”
Barbara Young, Pharm.D., editor of Consumer Medication Information, for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, in Bethesda, Maryland, concurs: “Side effects, even weird ones, can be the collateral damage” of the drug’s benefit.
