President Bill Clinton signed America’s original Violence Against Women Act into law on September 13, 1994. The Act provided $1.6 billion toward investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, imposed automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and allowed civil redress in cases prosecutors dropped.
The United States House of Representatives renewed a version of the act on May 16, 2012, but many American women, including Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisconsin), are vocally objecting to revisions and exclusions imposed by lawmakers objecting to protections for same-sex couples and undocumented immigrants.
