The largest public school cheating scandal in U.S. history has unfolded in Atlanta this week.
Because of what was uncovered inside this public school system, the issue of cheating on high-stakes tests has been thrust into the spotlight. And as it turns out, Atlanta isn’t the only city where test tampering has been found—or suspected.
Lisa Guisbond of Fair Test, a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to preventing the misuse of standardized tests, calls cheating on high-stakes tests “an epidemic.” She wrote on TakePart that “when so much rides on test results, teachers and administrators feel pressure to cut corners.”
Bcause of our test-taking culture and No Child Left Behind, she told TakePart, “school leaders like Atlanta Superintendent Beverly Hall have made it clear they will accept “no excuses” for failure to improve student test scores.”
Fear and intimidation created the climate at the Atlanta schools, according to investigators.
