The world is awash in refugees right now. At least 51 million people have been forced by war and persecution to flee their homes—many of them by the conflicts in Syria and other parts of the Middle East. That’s the highest number in at least 20 years, according to the United Nations.
For most people, the word “refugee” summons an image of a squalid camp filled with rows of ragged tents. Most displaced people don’t live in such places; they live in cities, alongside everyone else. Most of them are not passive victims waiting for handouts. Despite their often tough living conditions, they’re working jobs, starting businesses, and sending their kids to school. Groups such as the International Rescue Committee, featured on tonight’s episode of TakePart Live, are helping to make all that possible. Here’s a sample of what it looks like.
