The Global March for Elephants and Rhinos has organized demonstrations in more than 100 cities across the world.
“We are protesting against the political leaders of the world who do not have the guts and political will to make changes in their laws,” Dex Kotze, who helped put together a march in Johannesburg, told AFP.
Indeed, despite the symbolic burning of ivory across the world and growing activism, poaching rates have increased. In 2007, only 13 rhinos were killed in South Africa; last year, that number was bumped to 1,000. About 100,000 elephants were slaughtered for their ivory across Africa between 2010 and 2012.
The activists are fighting for real action—before it’s too late. Here are some of the most inspiring photos from Global March.
