Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords asks lawmakers to “be bold; be courageous” while seated next to her husband, retired astronaut and U.S. Navy Captain Mark Kelly, during a Senate Judiciary committee hearing on guns and violence yesterday. Giffords’s political career effectively ended when she was shot at point-blank range in Tucson, Arizona, two years ago. While Giffords was addressing the committee, three people were shot, one fatally, in a Phoenix, Arizona, office complex. One day prior to Giffords’s appearance on Capitol Hill, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, a girl who performed at President Obama’s inauguration with her high school band and had appeared in an anti-gang PSA, was shot to death in Chicago. The Senate is divided over enacting further gun regulations, but you can stand against gun violence.
