Jaime Duran stands in front of a sign he placed near his home to protest proposed drilling nearby in Naples, Florida on September 21, 2013. Earlier this year, the Durans were alerted to proposed drilling nearby when they received a letter about possible evacuation in a "hydrogen sulfide contingency plan" in the event of an explosion or a leak. "I don't understand why they're doing this," Duran told Fox4. For months, the Durans, along with a few other neighbors, have been leading the movement against the anti-drilling in Collier County, Florida. "They've met with elected officials, held candlelight vigils on the beach to raise awareness, and even protested outside of Governor Rick Scott's Naples home," according to Fox4. Alas, it appears their efforts are for not: In late September, Florida's department of environmental protection approved two permits for exploratory oil drilling just 1,000 feet from the Duran's property line.
