Sometimes it seems like the problems of the developing world are endless, but then again, so is the supply of ideas for solving them. Today, innovators and entrepreneurs all over the world who believe they’ve got solutions—but who don’t want to deal with the bureaucracies of big aid organizations—can take their ideas straight to the public for support. After all, if crowdfunding can raise money for independent movies and tech start-ups, why not for programs to reduce poverty or combat HIV/AIDS in Africa?

Here are a handful that we found particularly interesting, inspiring, or ridiculous. (You can decide for yourself which are which.) We’re not endorsing any of them—just encouraging you to take a look and to spread the idea of this 21st-century way to help.
