Earlier this month, a retired Brazilian police officer returned to crime fighting in the city of Taubate (located in the state of Sao Paulo). Rather than reclaiming his former position as police captain, Andre Luiz Pinheiro took on the role of community superhero, literally.
Unlike real-life vigilante superheroes (and those depicted in films like Kick Ass) Pinheiro will use his Batman guise to work alongside the Taubate city police to prevent crime. No, he won’t be chasing down villains in his Batmobile (as many originally reported). He'll concentrate on teaching local children the harms of criminal activity.
While a collaboration between police forces and a comic book superhero may seem silly, the historically shared complexities of Sao Paulo’s criminal and police forces give some hope for a brighter future for the region’s youth.
