It’s probably been a few years since you sat down with a box of crayons and a coloring book, but get ready to take a trip down memory lane: The hottest trend in stress relief swaps the images of Disney princesses and Marvel superheroes from your childhood for twisting vines, flowery patterns, and whimsical animals. Welcome to the era of the adult coloring book, a creative genre that helps grown-ups forget about the buzzing of their smartphones and engage in a little art therapy.
Two coloring books by Scottish illustrator Johanna Basford, Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest, are leading the adult coloring movement. In both the United States and the U.K., Basford’s titles are at the top of Amazon’s best-selling book list. “I think it is really relaxing, to do something analogue, to unplug,” Basford told The Guardian.
Gorgeously colored images of Basford’s drawings are popping up all over Instagram. Just looking at them is pretty relaxing—click through to see what you could create after you disconnect.
