Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is truly one of the hot food trends of the last decade. And unlike $5 cupcakes and food trucks, CSAs support farmers by providing them with a fair wage while bringing real food back to everyday Americans. A few years ago, CSAs almost exclusively offered produce, and we’d have to pick it up directly from the farm. In addition to a subscription fee, we’d also be expected to work the farm for a few hours a week.
While that model most certainly still exists — and thrives in many places — we’re now seeing several innovative variations, from fish shares to flexible pickup CSAs to fresh food that comes to you. Yes indeed, CSAs are growing up, and it’s never been easier to eat fresh, local food. Here are five community-supported food models that stand out above the rest in their innovation.
