After a car accident he decides to be open about his true sexuality and live life to the fullest, even if that means breaking the law. He lands in jail for fraud and falls in love with fellow inmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).
TransAmerica (2005): Bree Osbourne (Felicity Huffman), formerly Stanley Chupak, is about to have male-to-female sexual reassignment surgery. But before her therapist, Margaret, will give her the green light, Bree has to deal with something from the past: a teenage son who hustles and commits petty crimes that is looking for Stanley, his biological father.
Philadelphia (1993): When Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is fired from his law firm because he is gay and has AIDS, he hires a homophobic lawyer, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), who is the only lawyer willing, albeit reluctantly, to take on Andrew’s wrongful dismissal suit against his old firm.
The Kids Are Alright (2010): Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are a married lesbian couple living in California. Their two children, 18-year-old Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and 15-year-old Laser (Josh Hutcherson), share the same sperm donor, Paul (Mark Ruffalo). The kids decide to secretly meet up with Paul. Their mothers find out and suggest they all hang out together, though Nic doesn’t like the idea. Paul complicates their family dynamics in ways they may not be able to bounce back from.
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991): Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) learns about the fascinating life of Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) when she befriends Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). Ninny tells of Idgie’s friendship with Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker) and how Ruth moves in with Idgie to escape her abusive husband. When Ruth’s husband is suddenly murdered, Idgie is a suspect. Though the filmmakers got criticized for removing some of the overt lesbian content that was in the book’s plot, the film won a GLAAD Media award for “best lesbian content.”
Boys Don’t Cry (1999): Brandon (Hilary Swank) is the popular, new guy in a tiny Nebraska town until his friends find out he was born a woman and is living as a man. Their discovery rips Brandon’s life apart and results in his tragic and untimely death.
Milk (2008): Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) plays the famed gay rights activist and the first openly gay elected official. The film follows Milk’s life and political career from his 40th birthday to his death.
