Television history is full of will-they-or-won’t-they couples and high school sweethearts turned spouses. Dating, romance, and sexual intrigue are so often the plot drivers on our favorite shows, and though I, too, enjoy seeing Mindy and Danny finally kiss on The Mindy Project, why is the romantic relationship often the only kind we celebrate in our entertainment? Friendships, especially those between women, are an equally rich source of love, transformation, and drama.
That’s why I was so pleased that USA recently debuted Playing House, the second sitcom from the team of Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. As on their first show, the 2012 NBC sitcom Best Friends Forever, the two creators play lifelong best friends living together when their romantic relationships fall apart. In honor of Playing House’s winning depiction of female friendship, TakePart looks back at some of the other televised lady BFFs who have made us laugh and kept us company over the years.
