Climate scientists expressed concern in a recent study that the planet could reach a variety of climate change 'tipping points' in the next two centuries that would have potentially devastating consequences for human civilization. Thinking about these 'points of no return' really freaks me out, because it's not as though conditions would steadily get worse, (which would be terrible too), but events could become exponentially devastating. Even minor shifts in the global climate could send ripple effects that would have huge consequences.
According to the survey of 52 climate experts from around the world, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is the most likely climate catastrophe if temperatures continue to rise from human influence. Other major events could include a permanent El Nino or catastrophic die-off of the Amazon's tropical rain forest. As disheartening as all this news seems, the scientists do suggest that if we greatly reduce our carbon emissions in the next few decades, much of the warming could be avoided. So what are we waiting for?!
