It's been thought that environmental issues have been given short shrift in some Christian denominations, but the Christian Science Monitor reports that HarperOne is trying to make up for any lost ground by publishing the first ever eco-themed Bible. Not only is the book printed in an eco-friendly fashion, it highlights - literally - green issues.Produced with soy-based inks, recycled paper, and a cotton/linen cover, The Green Bible highlights in green more than a thousand passages relating to God's love for creation and the role of humans in caring for the earth. The text is the New Revised Standard Version, which is widely accepted throughout Christianity. The stated goal of the Green Bible is to show that the environment is in fact a scriptural issue, and as God's creation, the environment must be taken care of.Interestingly, some Christians have resisted environmentalism because it is "sometimes bordering on pantheism." This is an interesting theological shift, saying in effect that loving nature, and the parts of it, equates to holding true to false idols. I won't go into theology any more than that, but here's hoping the Green Bible does something to change that perception. You can takepart and watch a video over at Amazon to learn about the Green Bible and what they're trying to do, and pick up your copy, in case you're in the market for a new Bible. Though I don't think they really update it all to often.
