Is the "Skinny" at Starbucks Causing Body-Image Issues?

On an unofficial Starbucks gossip blog, a barista identified as Cassandra has decided to risk it all in protest of Starbucks' new policy on instructing employees to call non-fat, sugar-free drinks "skinny." Below is an excerpt from her post:

Imagine going to work for several hours at a time, and hearing the term "skinny" being called out countless times. It will undoubtedly have a negative affect on a person's self-esteem that may already be low from living in a society that is generally not accepting of people who do not fit the mold of a "beautiful" person. It creates an environment that people will not want to be in. It will exacerbate self-image issues that partners of ANY size may have. Why would ANYONE want to go into a store where they will hear potentially hurtful terms called out repeatedly with no regard as to how they may affect people?

Cassandra says that she is at risk of losing her job for her "insubordination" by protesting the new skinny terminology. Eeek! If code for skim milk and sugar free syrup is causing this much controversy, I'd hate to see a Starbucks employee post something about their policy of aggressive real estate tactics and their union busting practices. For a body lovin' perspective on weight, dieting and body health, check out Adiosbarbie.com.
