Ok, maybe that headline kinda trivializes what's actually a pretty admirable move on the British comic's part.
Gervais has joined with BUAV (the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) to help promote their Cargo Cruelty campaign that is working to pressure airlines to stop transporting monkeys to labs for experiments.
“I was shocked to learn that some airlines transport monkeys to laboratories around the world. I support the BUAV’s Cargo Cruelty campaign and urge these airlines to take a compassionate stance and say no to monkey shipments.”
Some monkeys used in labs are taken from the wild, while others are the offspring of wild-caught animals that are forced into captivity.
So which airlines transport monkeys? Here's the list from BUAV:
- Air Canada
- Air China
- Air France
- American Airlines
- China Eastern Airlines
- China Southern Airlines
- Continental Airlines
- Caribbean Airlines
- Lufthansa
- Philippine Airlines
- Vietnam Airlines
