Still Spooked by High-Fructose Corn Syrup

From The New York Times -- There have been recent studies linking High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) to fatty liver and kidney disease. The link to the obesity is still weak; but HFCS is having a devastating footprint on the environment.

“ They found that overall, people who drank two or more sugary sodas a day were at 40 percent higher risk for kidney damage, while the risk for women soda drinkers nearly doubled. ”

    Policies with Added Weight
    Policies with Added Weight

The Economist -- New York is implementing a new tax on non-diet sodas and sugary soft drinks. The 18% tax increase has The American Beverage Association in a tizzy, calling it the "sin tax." New York governor David Patterson is trying to save state money and trim the citizen's waistline at the same time. The state has a $15 billion budget deficit and the new tax is estimated to generate $404m in its first year alone.

“ Economic downturns are reckoned to contribute to obesity—people eat in response to stress and have less money to buy nutritious food. Much research has demonstrated the correlation between poverty and obesity: the healthiest foods are often the most expensive. New York’s announcement could highlight the potential for aggressive action against obesity during the current recession. ”
