CulinaryCorps Offers Food-Based Humanitarian Aid

tomatoes_postYesterday, while listening to Good Food, one of my favorite public radio shows, I learned about CulinaryCorps, a remarkable non-profit that brings culinary professionals into under-served communities to help support their cultural heritage through food and improve access to nutritious food.

Providing food-based humanitarian aid tailored to the particular needs of a community, both culturally and nutritionally, sounds like a brilliant way to help combat hunger while also promoting sustainable agriculture. I really love their ethos:

Integral to the CulinaryCorps approach to community service is the philosophy that food can be:  (1) a uniting force that brings together people, communities and countries to foster hospitality, generosity and communication; (2) a responsibility that encompasses many of the world’s most difficult challenges including hunger, sustainability and wellness; (3) an identity that creates the foundation for a community’s economy, history and individuality; and (4) a catalyst for bringing meaningful change to the table.

Until now, the "culanthropy" of CulinartCorps has been focused on neighborhoods in New Orleans. But this February they will bring a group of volunteers, culinary professionals and students to Puerto Rico to help reestablish the healthy culinary traditions there that have been eroded by industrialization, leaving the country largely dependent on imports and facing mounting health concerns. Use the action link below to find out how you can get involved with CulinaryCorps, either by donating or volunteering.
