Huffington Post Makes an Impact

Gina Telaroli | 5 months ago | Comments (0)

In exciting news, The Huffington Post has launched a new section designed to help people give back and connect with the stories they read.  The section, entitled IMPACT, puts actions at the end of stories that make it easy for anyone who has been inspired by an article to act.  Arianna Huffington explains:

"I'm thrilled to announce the launch of HuffPost Impact, our new section devoted to service, causes, volunteering, and giving back. Developed in partnership with the impassioned team at Causecast, HuffPost Impact will use the tools and power of online journalism to help people get involved, work together, and bring about real change. It offers our readers the opportunity to read a news story that moves them, then take immediate action in tangible, specifically tailored ways -- ranging from making a donation to a charitable group, to volunteering and contributing directly to an individual in need, to signing a petition and signing up to stay updated on stories that interest you."

Awesome! Be sure to head on over to the IMPACT section and get involved today!

The Walkway Over the Hudson opened to the public today, transforming the landmark Poughkeepsie-Highland railroad into the world's longest pedestrian bridge and a majestic linear park over New York's Hudson River.  While attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, I loved exploring the gorgeous Hudson Valley, and I can't wait to go back for a visit to walk across the bridge.  The walkway will provide access for walkers, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, and people with disabilities, and will connect the extensive network of trails, parks and communities on both sides of the rivers. Methyl iodide could be applied on strawberry fields within just a few hundred feet of homes and farm workers

Methyl iodide could be applied on strawberry fields within just a few hundred feet of homes and farm workers

Editor's Note:  This post was written by guest contributors Marilyn Lynds and Paul S. Towers. Lynds is a spokesperson and resident of the Moss Landing Heights Neighborhood. Towers is the state director of Pesticide Watch Education Fund.

This week, the California legislature will debate whether a toxic chemical, currently relegated to scientific laboratories, should be sprayed on strawberry fields throughout California. In just the past few weeks, legislators, scientists and advocates have been successful in stopping Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and chemical manufacturers from fast-tracking approval of methyl iodide, but this week's hearing will mark the first public debate over whether or not the chemical should be approved for use.

The results of the debate will have real impacts on California's workers and fenceline communities. Communities like the small, unincorporated Moss Landing are surrounded by strawberry fields, with fields, in some cases, only 100 feet from doorsteps. More
