Developing Countries Threaten To Walk Out of Climate Summit
Developing countries have threatened to walk out of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen if rich nations did not commit to greater reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and more funding for climate costs.
While I can understand being frustrated by talk that the United States and other heavy emitters may not commit to a binding, enforceable climate treaty in December, however, I don't think a walk-out is an effective way of dealing with the forestalling.
Everyone needs to come to the table if we are to develop a comprehensive plan to cut emissions, and as we saw with the boycott stunt of Senate Republicans, protest tactics will get us nowhere fast. Sure, the ongoing rumors that a treaty won't be reached next month is discouraging, but we must respond with a firmer resolve and work tirelessly to accomplish tangible results from the Copenhagen summit.
Obviously developed countries are generating the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions and have more financial resources to combat and prepare for climate change, but I think small, developing countries can make a tremendous global impact by taking their own steps to reduce emissions and inspire others to do the same, as The Maldives and Nepal have done.
The time has come to take action to combat climate change, use the act link below to find out how you can help turn Copenhagen into Hopenhagen.
