The Elders, a independent group of eminent global leaders, gathered with their grandchildren last Thursday for a picnic to show the importance of uniting generations to address the threat of climate change.

More than just a charming photo-op, the get together reminds us that as we look to international leaders to take decisive action at the UN climate summit, we should also keep in mind those who will inherit the planet and will have to deal with the consequences of how we choose to address global emissions.

The picnic included some of the world's most inspirational minds, including Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Ela Bhatt and Mary Robinson, and yet the grandchildren seemed to be the ones raising the tough questions.  While the wisdom and life experience of older generations is obviously vital to finding solutions to the climate crisis, I believe the fresh perspective and unfettered idealism of youth will help us reach further for answers and create lasting change.
