Over 200,00 families in Israel suffer from nutritional insecurity and to highlight the national hunger problem, Latet, an Israeli humanitarian aid organization, created a public art installation of empty dinner tables in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square this Rosh Hashanah. The starkly beautiful and poignant silent protest included symbolic place settings for 200,000 diners, stretching over 4,200 feet, and is part of a larger effort to raise money for those in need during the Jewish New Year and beyond.
Photographs reveal the massive scale of the exhibition, but I can only imagine how powerful those empty tables must have been in person. Vistors to the square were invited to visit kiosks surrounding the installation where they could donate money for meals and record messages of hope and solidarity for the needy.
