California School District Closes 28 Libraries
As a kid, I used to love going to the school library. In addition to having a great selection of books and media for kids to use, we also had such sweet librarians who loved working with kids. So I was so sad to read that California School District closes all 28 libraries! Great, nice way to celebrate
International Literacy Day on Sept. 8.
Due to severe budget cuts six years ago, five certified librarians were eliminated and the district replaced them with technicians and assistants, but now even those workers are getting eliminated. Linda Rodriguez, a library tech at Folsom High School for the last 18 years told the local Sacramento Bee she was surprised that the district chose to reinstate freshmen athletics instead of saving the libraries. "What a nightmare. There is no accountability, and things are going to be cannibalized."
I just don't get it, how do you have a school without a library? The school superintendent suggests students use the Internet for school research, but that's just not the same. Call me old fashion, but there is something so scholarly about being in a library. The scene, the smell, the quiet sound, it just is the right place for learning. You can't recreate that energy online.
Parents and students at Sutter Middle School are organizing a fund drive to try and help save their library. Check out the video:
Although the fundraiser ended last week but click here for ways to help.
