Today Hiroshima's mayor called upon international leaders to abolish nuclear weapons, as Japan commemorates the 64th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack today.  The debate over nuclear disarmament has unfortunately taken a back seat lately, as discussions tend towards other global concerns.  Yet as we reflect on the atrocities wrought by the attack which killed an estimated 140,000 people, the bombing of Nagasaki that occurred three days later, and nuclear threats, real or suspected, that have continued to this day, the time has come to make a priority of banning all nuclear weapons.

President Obama's goal to rid the world of nuclear weapons, and plans for a U.N. security council meeting to work towards that end, are certainly encouraging, but hopefully the talk results in action.  As Steven Crandell elucidates in the Huffington Post, the challenge will be for the U.S. to commit to a clear plan for disarmament:

We should focus on building public support for a phased, verifiable and internationally-agreed plan to eliminate the weapons.

These renewed discussions hold the promise that one day we could live in a world without the threat of nuclear holocaust.  We need to demand that our leaders take the steps neccesary to make that a reality.  Use the action link below to find out what you can do to help.
